Business plan

People & Planet

This business makes a positive difference by...

  • Helping people who are unable to look after their garbage bins themselves.
  • Ensuring that the garbage is being properly disposed on a regular basis
  • Making someone feel good because they know that they are helping you develop your business skills.
  • Moving one step closer to being a great business person, who will have the potential to help even more people in the future.

Before You Start

Do Some Market Research

Conduct a quick survey among your neighbours by asking:

  • Do they have a busy daily schedule?
  • Do they sometimes forget that its garbage collection day? (This question would create a need for your business)
  • Would they want help in taking out their rubbish?

Take special note of the elderly / disabled neighbours who are more likely to need your service.

This would give you a clear idea on how your business will perform!

Things You'll Need

  • To be organised!
  • Make sure you bring the rubbish bins out on the correct day and time!
  • A diary to keep track of all your clients and their payments. It will make sure that you get paid for your work!
  • Gloves- to handle those gross overfilling garbage bins your neighbour has

Finding Clients

  • Start with your surrounding Neighbours. They know you and trust you already (we hope!).
  • Approach them with a smile!
  • Make an eye-catching flyer.  Put them in letterboxes or hand it out to neighbours.
  • Offer the first service free! Proves that you will do a good job. It's an incentive for people to start using you

Pricing: Offer a price that is reasonable and seems affordable for your neighbours (A dollar a week from ten houses already makes you $40 a month!)

Think Safe!

  • Whenever you're visiting the house of any client you don't know really well,  always have an adult present, and make sure your parents know where you're  going to be working.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat so you don't end up looking like a tomato!
  • Use gloves when handling the garbage bins. You don't want some weird growth on your hands.

Get on with it

Organise Yourself:

  • Keep a Notebook Diary
  • Write down the all your clients' garbage collection days.
  • Keep a Receipt / Invoice book
  • Keep track of all the money you collect and are owed.
  • Your Income less your Expenses = your Profit.

Have a One Page Agreement

Include:

  • Which day you are expected to bring out their garbage.
  • Does this include the blue recycle bins too?
  • How much money they will pay you, and when they will pay you.
  • A place for both of you to sign.

Taking Out the Trash

It would be a good idea to make sure you got your days sorted as no one wants to come back to an overfilling garbage bin. Also take note of when the garbage will all be collected for you to bring back the empty bins.

Plan your collection route to see which would be the fastest way to get the jobs done.

Before you start to walk around the entire neighbourhood, make sure that you have enough time to take out all of your clients' garbage in time for the collectors to come.

Take the garbage bins out and leave it at the edge of the road in front of your clients' house

When the garbage has been collected at the end of the day. Remember to go to all your clients' houses to bring back the empty bins to their original spot.

Do a Good Job

  • Make sure that the bins are empty when u bring them back in
  • Pick up any garbage that may be left on the street (use those gloves!)
